What's new in Adobe Acrobat 9?

Between versions 8 and 9 is not much; however, they have improved on some of the features. You can easily capture websites in a PDF with the HTML links embedded in the document.

A neat feature in Acrobat 9 is comparing two PDF files where changes are highlighted indicating the revisions made from the first to the last version.

Acrobat 9 still had the ongoing feature of converting any Microsoft Office product by using the PDF Maker and sending it through Acrobat.com or your own server.


A new feature is creating a live collaboration session of the same document so that everyone can see the same document. However, this does require and Adobe ID, which can be obtain by registering through Adobe.com.
Didn't you hate it that you had to create each box or field for creating forms? Well, Acrobat 9 now allows you to create forms in a second. Using the forms wizard you can now create a document to a form in a matter of clicks. Neverthelesss, there may be those fields that still need to be created manually because it may not be identified as a fillable area.

There are those documents where you wanted to know if someone completed them or who has not completed the form, well, Acrobat 9 now has a tracker that can be used to shwo when forms have been completed. This can only be done if you are usign the distribution wizard in Acrobat 9. This feature was available in Acrobat 8, but it had some technical issues.

Need to sign a document, but can't get there? Acrobat 8 had digital signatures, but now Acrobat 9 allows you to create an ink signature by adding handwritten signatures on a page. This will help expedite your documents with real signatures.

Multimedia and 3D models have not be resolved in Acrobat 9. You can add flash videos and animations to your PDF documents. No additional player is needed. When you are asking for feedback on multimedia or 3D models you can add comments to the video as you are watching it in the PDF document. This function can be done in the standard and reader versions of Acrobat 9.

Last, looking for a digital program that will assemble all your PDF documents in order or just in one file to be reviewed? Well, Acrobat 9 incorporated the PDF portfolio. You can share your PDF documents in order or in a batch through the PDF portfolio incorporated in Acrobat 9.

Mahalo e Cassie for the Adobe Acrobat 9 update. I tried testing out the digital signature with the preschool application I was working on for Katelyn. The new version worked well with converting the PDF non fillable form to a fillable one and it was cool to see it pick up the signature field automatically and link up to security features for the digital signature. I think the preschool is still old fashioned so I'll have to print out and sign by hand for those pages of the application. :)

A "wouldn't it be nice" idea that's been around a while is the ability to tag a map with images that are linked to more information about the site. Kelly C suggested it as a way for students to share knowledge about a cultural/historic site or the geographic area they live in with classmates. (right, no addresses!) There are now cameras and even storage media that embed latitude and longitude into images as they are shot. But you don't need fancy new toys to do this. Aloha all, Here's my o wau topic for this week. We all know the power of the Avatar and their popularity with our learners from our A`o Makua courses and I know we have discussed ways to incorporate them into our `Ike Hawai`i classes as well. Well, I can't take credit for finding this resource. Our resident Avatar expert a.k.a. Christy told me to check it out because Avatars can now chat. So please join me in finding out what other engaging and motivating feats these amazing characters can do to help us provide meaningful learning experiences for all our students. You can read about OddCast and their AvatarSpace or go to their Web site and test out some of these features. I'm hoping that this may provide us with a motivating way to get students, in both programs, to participate in some cooperative learning and sharing. Zoho Creator

I thought I’d share this web application I came across in my quest to find a relatively simple app to help us manage our mentoring data in the DL Orientation. Our specific needs were that it be a free online database, password protected, had the capability of rapid form development without too much programming knowledge and was easy for the end user to use. The application that met these requirements was Zoho Creator ( http://www.zohocreator.com/ ) a part of a suite of online applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, wikis, organizers and more. What’s great about Zoho Creator is that they have an online repository of applications already developed that you can download to your account and use for free. Initially, I tried some of these applications, but it was overkill for our needs. Zoho Creator can do a lot if you know programming and they have a pay model where it allows you more flexibility and features. I think Zoho Creator would be a useful tool for both...
