del.icio.us, A Social Bookmarking Manager

I was introduced to this Web site awhile back, but haven't had a chance to create an account and play around with it. Therefore, I thought I'd use my owau opportunity to begin building our VSDL network so we can share great resources with each other. One of the main benefits of using this Web-based bookmarking tool is that you won't need to import or export bookmarks that are specific to a Web browser anymore. Once the del.icio.us toolbar is downloaded, it's also really simple to add a bookmark and tag words which allows for easy searching. To link to my bookmarks, just add me via my username "dohirata." Love the name! I found the concept of social bookmarking interesting. I noticed that when I added Dorothy we had similar work bookmarks (KS sites, reference sites (like time zones), and professional development). I like the idea of tagging your bookmarks and finding similar sites through that feature.

What I really like is the popular Web bookmarks. Through it I found our next OWAU, New Web Platforms. I didn't even get through the 10 they mentioned without finding something of interest, Fire Eagle. I'll post a separate one so we can get started on that for next time.

This was an interesting web site. I've heard about social bookmarking. In fact, many of the speakers/presentations at the ETS Conference made reference to it, but no one really explained it in detail. I think I get a better sense of its usefulness now that I actually tried it. So after I put in my bookmarks, I thought "what a nerd!" :) I did see a bunch of bookmarks I had kind of forgot about and a lot that I could "bundle" and now send to Komarey. I had forgotten how many I gathered when we were researching sustainability or mälama `äina for A`o Makua. I'll forward those to you, Komarey.
Like Christy, I went to the popular Web bookmarks and went to the Education section. I found this REALLY cool web site called Wordle. You can make these word clouds, kind of like word art, that you can print or take screen shots of. I was so excited thinking about all the ways that you could use it with students and then I read the FAQs that said the site is totally inappropriate to use with students because there is a public gallery that isn't censored and some "words" used may be unsuitable for children :( Can I add an attachment to this? I can share the one I created. Anyways, I'm looking forward to checking out more of the del.icio.us features. Mahalo for sharing it with us, Dorothy!

Like Kelly D, I've been hearing about social bookmarking for a while at various conferences & workshops. I've been meaning to find out more about what this is but, as usual, if it's not necesary it gets pushed back to the bottom of my list. :)

I can see how students might be interested in viewing their classmates' bookmarks. It can tell you a lot about a person's interests. I could also being useful for group research project. Thanks Dorothy.

I too enjoyed the features that del.icio.us has to offer. The best attribute is the fact that it can be accessed anywhere you are. You don't even have to have your computer. We get so used to our browser and all the saved bookmarks there, that we forget the actual urls. I will definitely use this site simply for that reason.

Being a new member of VSDL, it was nice to have a central place that I can find my information. This comes at a great time because I'm still familiarizing myself with things. So the question always comes up..."Where do I find..." The answer is del.icio.us!

A "wouldn't it be nice" idea that's been around a while is the ability to tag a map with images that are linked to more information about the site. Kelly C suggested it as a way for students to share knowledge about a cultural/historic site or the geographic area they live in with classmates. (right, no addresses!) Aloha all, Here's my o wau topic for this week. We all know the power of the Avatar and their popularity with our learners from our A`o Makua courses and I know we have discussed ways to incorporate them into our `Ike Hawai`i classes as well. Well, I can't take credit for finding this resource. Our resident Avatar expert a.k.a. Christy told me to check it out because Avatars can now chat. So please join me in finding out what other engaging and motivating feats these amazing characters can do to help us provide meaningful learning experiences for all our students. You can read about OddCast and their AvatarSpace or go to their Web site and test out some of these features. I'm hoping that this may provide us with a motivating way to get students, in both programs, to participate in some cooperative learning and sharing. Zoho Creator

I thought I’d share this web application I came across in my quest to find a relatively simple app to help us manage our mentoring data in the DL Orientation. Our specific needs were that it be a free online database, password protected, had the capability of rapid form development without too much programming knowledge and was easy for the end user to use. The application that met these requirements was Zoho Creator ( http://www.zohocreator.com/ ) a part of a suite of online applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, wikis, organizers and more. What’s great about Zoho Creator is that they have an online repository of applications already developed that you can download to your account and use for free. Initially, I tried some of these applications, but it was overkill for our needs. Zoho Creator can do a lot if you know programming and they have a pay model where it allows you more flexibility and features. I think Zoho Creator would be a useful tool for both...
